The Victorian Internet highlighted the consequences that emerge
when a new technology is introduced into our world. One consequence that stood
out to me was the impact technology has on jobs. In the book and in
the video we watched, both jobs were gained and lost as new technology
developed. Some jobs were turned obsolete, some held fame and glory while
others were reserved for the desperate in search of something to do.
I think about today’s
society and how robots have replaced many fundamental jobs in a technology
takeover. Jobs that once required a human touch now can be completed more
efficiently and with more precision by a machine. At the same time when jobs
are being lost to robots, companies are looking to hire tech savvy problem
solvers. If we want to produce the “ideal graduate” or a contributing member of
society, we must send them off with the skills needed to be successful. These
are the skills outline in the P.I.C.K.L.E. model. Job seekers will need to be
creative, critical thinkers who are able to communicate and collaborate with
others. This is the purpose for our
mission.
Your quote, 'Job seekers will need to be creative, critical thinkers who are able to communicate and collaborate with others.' has been our district's message for the past 2 years. After our first few classes in this program, I really understand the importance of this message. We need to transform our ideals and instruction to provide this for our students.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Although new technology presents new problems to solve, it should also jumpstart the conversation of the need for creative, critical thinkers who can put this technology to good use. As we discussed, there are always going to be cons to new technology, but if we can highlight the pros effectively, and learn to use these tools to contribute to society, then we're teaching students to think the right way. We need to model how these technologies can be used for good, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! Automation is the biggest threat to future jobs. If future generations are taught wit PICKLE in mind they will be able to think and problem solve.
ReplyDeleteI think is very interesting how all the different concepts we are exploring are interrelated. You connected the consequences of technology with the PICKLE and definitely agree that as society changes and technology develops the PICKLE becomes more relevant. We need to make sure that our students will be able to fulfill those jobs and roles of the future society.
ReplyDeleteYour thoughts are an important lesson that we should be taking away from our weekly classes. The future will be software and data driven. What programs can we get these machines to run? How much more efficient are these machines than humans? While not every graduate of the future needs to be a software engineer, all professions can be changed by graduates who are educated with the PICKLE.
